MM Chassis Number

Post by StefanoP »

Dear friends,

my (my wife's, actually) MM is going well now that the distributor was overhauled, the spark plugs changed and a 80 years old carburettor specialist has rebuilt once again the old SU (and many thanks, Mike, for your support!!)

Unfortunately now I face a huge problem, though, as for the silly Italian laws every car must have a stamped chassis number (this apart from the 'normal' chassis plate inside the engine bay, that my car has and in nice condition.) Does anyone know where Morris could have possibly stamped a chassis number? It would be very important because without that number we can't pass the local MoT. Thank you!

Hi Stefano,

The chassis number of my ‘52 car is stamped on the RHD mounting plate of the shock Damper.
I hope it helps you.[frame]Image[/frame]

I have not heard of it being stamped on the mounting plate before. Mine is stamped on the engine compartment bulkhead where the accelerator cable comes through. You can also look on the footwells inside the car.
If you cannot find it anywhere then stamp the number on yourself. Just the numbers, not the letters.

My MM has the number stamped on the bulkhead below were the main wiring loom comes from inside the car, should be farily easy to find.

Mike,

In the Netherlands we have P.Olyslager technical manuals like Haynes.
The place of the stamped chassis number is quote in the Identification paragraph. See scan.
I think it was a typical Dutch Molenaars Factory way for CKD cars to stamp it on a solid plate. :D

Sorry the scan is in Dutch language[frame]Image[/frame]

I will amend that to "I have not seen it stamped there on a Cowley built Minor"

The bulkhead number is normally near the aluminum throttle cable, see above picture

Dear friends,

thank you very much for your help. Monday I'll check in all the places that you kindly suggested and I'll see what I find. More trouble ahead.... bureaucracy in Italy is a nightmare for every classic-car enthusiast! :x

Ciao

Hello,

the stamped chassis number has been found under the carpet behind the front passenger's seat. It looks like it was stamped there (unusual place) in Italy when the car was imported here, more than 40 years ago. So the MoT officer was happy and has at last homologated our MM for road use! :D I look forward to drive it tomorrow (or Monday) from the garage where it is now to my own heated garage in Faenza, and I shall post some pictures of this memorable event.

My wife expressed some strong opinions about the mental sanity of someone who decides to drive a small open car with a top that leaks and no heater during the only week-end so far with a strong 'snow' forecast, but you understand how much I want to drive the MM after so many months of works and tribulations.....

30 Novembre 2010: back on the road, (nearly) complete! Isn't she nice? Now she will sleep in the garage with my other cars waiting for a day with a less frigid temperature to be driven a bit longer. Thank you all (especially to Mike of course....) for your help and support during these months of tribulation!

Cheers
