A mate of mine who is currently fitting the 9" Wolseley brakes came across a problem this afternoon. Look at the photos below and spot the difference.

The lower trunnion on the drivers side collides with the brake backing plate. There is no clearance what so ever.It also appears to be a greater distance from the stub axle centre line-ie lower on the kingpin. Could it be that the car was fitted with say a pattern trunnion as it looks different? The passenger side is fine. Would it be safe to carefully file away some metal to achieve clearance?
Any ideas? It looks like it's going to have to be stripped down and checked as there is something wrong somewhere. We don't want to take any risks.

The trunnion is either knackered - and trying to pull off the king pin, or it's just not screwed on the king pin far enough! This is a major advantage of the W brakes - the lower trunnion CANNOT pull off the kingpin - it's trapped by the backplate! Excellent safety feature. Check it out carefully. Edit - Actually - even the 'good' one looks a bit too close - check it is screwed on far enough too. If all seems well - could be just poorly made trunnions - so yes - just grind a bit off the base - but make sure they are not worn and are screwed on as far as possible first.

I would agree, the trunnion does not look as though it is screwed on far enough, not a problem I encountered with my Wolseley brakes

Trunnion removed but was quite tight and needed a screwdriver as a lever to remove it although it had been greased. This is what the kingpin thread looked like on removal:[frame][/frame]
It was cleaned off and carefully dressed:[frame][/frame][frame][/frame]
Cleaned up nicely:[frame][/frame]
Regreased and screws up fully now-so problem solved. Wll also check the other side today just to be sure.
Then bleed and adjust the brakes so should be able to test the W-brakes tomorrow or later today.

Still got my Wolseley set up to fit to the traveller.

First report says they can lock the wheels no problem-nose is still intact! The linings are new and there is a slight pull to one side which will have to be checked. There is still some residual air in the system so it will need bleeding again.

Remember - slight pull can be caused by the rear brakes. Or just take the corners off the shoes - and if still not right - swap the drums side to side as first fix - and if still not, mix and match the shoes side to side. I'm assuming the cylinders were all free and easy ?

We discussed the possibility of the rear brakes last night-will be checked today. The cylinders are brand new on the front. He has only driven about 15 miles but intends to whip off the front drums to check the wear pattern.

Movement in the tie rods is another possibility, they haven't seen forces like this before, and weaknesses that weren't apparent before could surface.
