my door keeps getting stiffer to close, is this due to worn hinge pins or does it just need oiling

Why not just oil or grease them and see what happens?

It might work if the door is actually stiff on the hinges.
If it's hard to get it to latch try putting some masking tape over the catch and locating hole on the door post then shut the door.
This will show up where things are engaging and give an idea which way they may need to be moved to make them work better.
