Rear axle gaskets and seals

I've got to replace all the gaskets and seals on my rear axle as oil is leaking from one side into a brake drum (yes, it IS hypoid oil, not brake fluid) and from where the prop shaft joins the axle. Anyone done this? How long does it take? I've heard that the half shafts can be a b****r to remove.

Half shafts are easy to remove and the gasket that seals to the axle flange equally easy to replace. However, the rear diff seal is another matter altogether......

Half shafts will only be difficult if the splines have twisted - in which case they should NOT be reused! Check if the breather on top of the diff casing is blocked - causing pressure and thus forcing oil out. Also check it's not just overfilled........

Ok, thanks for that, I'll check the breather and the oil level first, but if it's not those I will just have to hope the half shafts aren't twisted.

While you're at it check the drain holes on the back (facing the diff) of the backplates directly under the axle tube. If the inner oil seal is leaking it's supposed to dribble out here rather than inside the drum and onto the brakes. If they're clear and dry then the oil seals should be OK and you'll only have to replace the outer o-rings and gaskets rather than strip down the hubs.
