how to get a v5?

Bought a 1956 minor with chassic tags and number plates intact but been off road since late 60s early 70s,how do i go about gaetting a v5 for this car,any help appreciated,Stevie

If the car has never had a V5 (these electronic records started in the 70's) then it would only have had a paper log book. In these cases DVLA have no records for the car on file. You can apply for a log book using the 'V765' scheme which allows the cart to retain the original reg*. To make the application you ned the correct supporting documentation and this has to be verified by the relevant club official (in this case via the MMOC) before the DVLA will consider the application.

In some cases where you don't meet the criteria for retaining the original reg, you can still register the car, but normally with a Minor you will be able to make the V765 as all the production records are on file at the BMIHT (British motor industry heritage trust) and when you get a certificate from them it goes a long way to meeting the criteria (but the cert isn't free though). Certain items or paperwork such as an old tax disc will help, but it's all down to chance regarding what paperwork you get with the car.

There is a constant stream of these cars turning up and despite expectations that fewer would be found in future, DVLA are getting as many applications now as when the scheme started 20 years ago - there must be an awful lot of disused barns and garages all over the country as these cars keep on being unearthed!
