I have just passed my driving test and have a 1969 1000 saloon, and i would like to fit a stereo and speakers!
But i am wondering, do i need to buy anything special or could i just get a set or something from halfords or motabitz?
And from anyones experience, best place to fit it!!
Would be very much appreciated!

Hi Ben.

TBH in a minor you are best to avoid anything flashy as it just makes your car a target for the less honest members of the community. As to fitting it - best to do it yourself! If you ask somewhere like halfrauds to fit it you will just get a blank response and "where does it go?"

I've wired in a standard DIN plug (cut out of a Honda at the scrappers) so that If I want to I can swap stereos without having to go through the faff of re-wiring

As long as the car is negative earth the it will be fine.
There are limited places to fit a radio, mine is under the dash to the right of the steering column.
Others have fitted them in the glove box apertures, or dropped the heater a bit and fitted them above it.

Mine is under the passenger glovebox...

mine is inside the glove box so no one can see it

No-one can see mine when I leave the glovebox open (which is a technique recommended to me by the local crime prevention cop)

Which was the theory I went on when fitting mine, but sometimes, not all the time, when I shut the door the glovebox lid falls down as the magnet is not that great

as i go over a speedbump my glove box door opens

This is how i have mine set up -
Stereo:

now finally wired up through the ignition so it turns itself on and off with the engine

Speakers just above the parcel shelf:


Amp under drivers seat and sub in the boot. With the car locked up and the glovebox shut nothing at all is visible.

im planning on fitting mine in the glovebox behind the steering wheel an external drive bolted down next to it, rubber mounted ofcourse. (damn vibrations)

only downside is my glove boxes open everytime i breath on them =[

If you go old style they made a slide bracket for car stereos under dash.
The bracket had a lock and releases so you can remove the stereo.
You still have to remove the attena wire from the bask and any RCA plugs.
All of the other wiring stays with the top bracket - power, ground, speaker wires.
The bracket has makes all the above connections - Very cool unit - hard to find.
I got one so I could put the stereo in the trunk when I leave the car unattended.
Being a ragtop - Tourer - I never lock the car. I needed some thing removable.
They still steal the Stereos from in the glove box and under dash if not concealed very well.
I have lost several stereo units over the years from different places before finding the slide mount.
The front scuttle panels, side panels, doors & under the rear seat will hold speakers.
When you pull the panels you will see the best place for the depth of the speakers.
Some people put a large speaker in the trunk for more base.

Radio in passengers glovebox, amplifier in drivers glovebox. Speakers hung (via cable ties as to stop horrible vibrations) under the dash in the huge holes, and boxed speakers under both front seats. Radio is a standard halfords unit, as are speakers and amp, and some classic box speakers.

I agree - I put mine under hear (a set of 4 inch ones from maplins) Rather than the cable ties, i made up some little blocks of BALSA the plywood plinth screws through. This way, they're both effective and inconspicuous.

and i've got my test on monday, and have a 1970 1000 2-door saloon :p (not on the road yet, though :/)

And i also agree in that the glove box irs the best place for it. it's hidden, and no-one knows it';s there to steal!

WHAT ITEMS DO I NEED TO FIT A RADIO

eg amp, airel, a power coverter, the easy ones the radio and speakers

You need:
The Head Unit
ISO plug with bare wires coming out
2x (or 4x ?) speakers of your choice (similarly rated to the power output of the radio, so if the radio is 45Wx4 pick up 35-45W speakers)
Aerial of your choice
Lots of decent gauge wiring.

Take your ISO plug and wires. You'll have red, black, yellow, green, green + black, purple, purple + black, white, white + black, grey and grey + black. Black you can earth to the body underneath a nearby bolt. Run the yellow straight to the battery with a 10amp fuse in line, as near to the battery as possible. Take your multimeter (you do have one of those don't you? Get one if you don't, less than a tenner and an absolute God-send when diagnosing electrical problems) and pull out the speedometer. You will now be able to feel around the back of the ignition barrel, and use the multimeter to find the contact on the back of the barrel that gives you 12v when you turn the ignition on. Plug your red wire in there (if you need further instructions on this then I can expand). Your radio will now turn on when you start the engine and turn off when you switch it off, but it can still be turned on and listened to with the ignition totally off.

You will now have 8, coloured wires coming out of the ISO plug. White is + and - for left front, grey is right front, green is left rear and purple is right rear. Mount your speakers in whatever way you wish, I only have two fronts and a sub at the moment but I may run rear speakers in later on if I can find a good place to put them.

Drill a hole in the body wherever you want your aerial, usually one of the front or rear wings, and preferably on the drivers' side if you don't want the hedge to take it out (yep, been there, done that) and run the cable that comes with the aerial through the car to the back of the head unit.

Enjoy your moozak!! I still need to upgrade my sub to something half decent, but my amp is sorted so I'm half way through the battle. I have some nice JVC components under the dash and with the sub I get a lot of comments about the sound quality being unexpectedly good. When I'm done with the system it should sound even better

Give some consideration to an internal aerial, they work quite well and save drilling the bodywork.

If you go for the drilling option put some paint on the bare metal that is exposed, a touch up pot of any colour will do.

hi lambretta ash, with my stereo i decided to get one that i could plug my ipod into, and control the ipod (skip track etc) from the head unit, which meant i could hide my ipod in the glovebox. using the ipod as my personal radio station meant i didnt bother sorting out an aerial. that was one problem solved!

the stereo i got came with instructions that also said what colour wire did what, so i didnt bother with an ISO plug, i just cut the plug off the bit of loom that came with the stereo and crimped spade connectors on the wires i needed. turned out i only needed 6 wires (i think) pos and neg to each speaker (i only fitted 2) and pos and neg from the battery.

decide if you want it to come on with the ignition, or be able to turn it on without the engine running, and then take your 12V live feed accordingly.

i still dont know weather i want too... considering it is obviously not an orignal part... im worried about devaluing the car. If that makes any sense? Do you find alot of mogeys with radios?
