I have a problem with the brake light which come on when the ignition is turned on.
Have checked wiring and all seems ok.
When the brake light switch fails do the brake lights
come on or not work at all??

Usually they fail... Any chance there is some pressure retained in the system - perhaps master cylinder not returning to full 'release' position ? I assume if you pull a wire off the switch - the lights then go out. You could try opening a bleed nipple to release any back pressure - but most likely it is a failed switch.

Unlikely but is your brake pedal coming up fully as its not unkown that when the shaft and pedals are worn they can partially stick on the shaft.

if the lights are on when you have remioved one or both wires from the switch, then it's definately not the switch.
If removing one wire from the switch outs the lights out, then it'll be the switch...

Thanks everybody for your suggestions.
I put in a new switch and hey presto problem solved.
MOT was this afternoon and passed with flying colours!
Thanks
