Speedo & Switch

Hi,
Please could you help me with a few questions regarding my 58 traveller.
1) Is the speed is correct for a 58 Traveller? The Indicator light doesn't feel correct (especially since I've only trafficators fitted) the numbers on it are SN4401/15 1500.
2) The speedo is 20mph out (i.e the needle doesn't start moving until moving at 20mph but is correct with a 20mph offset from then onwards) is this a case that the cable has been inserted incorrectly?
3) Any idea what the slider switch below the light switch is for? (It doesn't appear to do anything)
Thanks
Rob.

I suspect the speedo is from a slightly later car - nothing to do with the speedo cable! You can carefully remove the needle - and refit it so you get more accurate readings without the 20 mph offset. Would be a trial and error exercise - great care needed! The little switch puts the dash panel illumination ON/OFF - only when the side lights are on........

1. The speedo is correct for a 948cc / 4.55 diff. Are you sure that the engine / diff have not been changed.
There is a speedo chart on the Series MM website
http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Car Ident.
Trafficators were correct for the age, the light should glow steady when indicating. A photo of the indicator switch?
2. Maybe someone has been fiddling with the speedo and moved the needle, it should just rest against the stop pin
3. The switch below the dash turns the inst. panel lights off. Try it in the dark. About as much use as an ash tray on a motor bike.

In the olden days it was the law (might still be

) to illuminate your car by means of the sidelights when parked in an unlit street.
The dashboard switch allowed the battery drain to be at a minimum.

Thanks for the info
Checking the chassis Number looks like it should be a SN4407/00 1504 which doesn't have an indicator light.
Engine is 948 (assume diff is 4.55 but not sure how to check)
The switch is on a stork with an amber light near to the steering column (which illuminates constantly).
I'll have a play with the needle.
Thanks for the info in the switch, I'll try it tomorrow but doubt it has worn out with use.

The speedo you have fitted should be ok with a bit of adjustment and you have a spare warning light for accessories

Dash lights should illuminate when the external lights are on, but if its not working you might have the same problem I had.
The spring in the switch was missing resulting in the sliding contact plate failing to push upwards onto the contacts. try removing the switch and checking - if the springs gone or broken nab one from a bayonet lamp fitting (it'll be buried in the contact prongs). Its the perfect width (if i remember right) but needs a length trim. You can easily take the little switch apart and fit the new spring but i think you need to remove the drivers glove box out for access.
Be careful not install the repaired switch, check its all working, and then drop the plastic slider down the back of the dash during a final tweak. An hours repair nearly finished and working, and then I had to order a new one from ebay. School boy.
Good luck
