Hello

There's a crack in my 1952 Series MM sidevalve block!

Some say it could be repaired. Others say another engine.

Advice please.

Almost certainly another engine - depends where the crack is really.

it almost certainly can be repaired by a specialist, but with a relatively common engine like the side valve, as BMCE says, look for another engine. Specialist casting repairs are usually expensive.

The crack is in the middle of the block.

Where should I look to get a replacement engine?[frame][/frame]

That could very probably be repaired by 'brazing' - it's not in a high stress area - worth a try. Groove it out then fill in with braze. But how long it would last - well, who knows. For another block - ask on here - and ebay etc etc - maybe an ad in Pratical Classics that sort of thing won't do any harm........

that was meant in the context of the expense of a specialist repair which would be viable for a rare car, which does not describe the sidevalve Minor.

It looks to be between the water jacket and the head stud hole has it been causing any problems will not a new head gasket work
As for "a relatively common engine like the side valve" I have been looking for a spare engine for a while now . It needs an overhaul but I have a problem with some of the studs pulling out of the block so have to be extremely careful on tightening the nuts. Also there is leakage of oil and water though the head nuts after hand tightening on my one. So if you find that elusive supply of engines PM me ASAP will you

It was running really hot. So I assumed replacement gasket and a head skim if necessary....but alas ...not so simple.

Possibility of 3!! 2 block only and 1 complete.

But I don't know if they are the early or late type. Will know about 2 tomorrow and the other Sat.

There are some terrific folk in this moggy world. Makes me want to keep it after all.

Brain is fuddled after making so many calls.

Got a few possibles so far.

2 engines [ but 1 definately an early 918cc ] and 2 blocks but not sure if they are the late version yet.

Will know more by Saturday.
