I am putting a 1098 box onto a 1275 engine and I know I need a 1098 clutch, But I only have a 948 clutch operating rod. Do I need a 1275 release bearing? Any ideas as I know the 948 release bearing won't be thick enough with the setup....?

I really don't know about this - but I will be doing it some day soon! I don't think the 948 rod makes any great difficult - and I 'think' a 1098 release bearing should be ok - but I'm watching this thread with interest!

Which 1275 are you fitting, Marina or Midget?

Engine mods I'm fine with (I've already done a 1098 to 1275 conversion) but this was with a 1098 box. My problem now is that the 1098 box I have is sans clutch linkage and I have a nagging doubt in the back of my mind that I can't carry over the 948 clutch linkage and if I do the 948 thrust bearing is too thin. Also I am not sure if a 1098 or 1275 thrust can be used with a 948 linkage.....??

If you use a 1098 box then you will need the 1098 clutch forks as the gearbox front plate is different and pivot is in a different position to the 948 forks. You will also need the 1098 thrust

Yes, thats the plan...

I'm assuming that will work ok with a 1098 gearbox - yes the flywheel sits a small distance further away from the block (hence the possible starter bendix problems) - but I think the amount of adjustment in the linkage should cope with it just fine.

The 1098 linkage works ok with the thinner diaphram clutch of the Midget engine so you should be ok with the 1098 assembly, besides you can always cut extra thread on the adjuster rod

I had to "correct" the starter when I converted the Black Traveller - So it looks like I'll be needing the 1098 clutch rod and fork for the conversion on the Blue one

Certainly need a 1098 'fork' for a 1098 gearbox.

Looking on parts sites it appears the fork is the only part specific to 1098/948 so I guess the 948 rod / linkage should be OK to reuse?

Ah yes! The 'fork' is probably the same - as long as the 1098 box has the front plate - should be fine!

The rod and linkage are the same. Keep anything bolted to the 1098 with the 1098 and you will not go far wrong

Are you sure the actual fork is different for 948 and 1098? I thought it was the gearbox front cover that is different? The 1098/1275 front cover is shallower and has 2 holes in different places to the 948. I have a 1098 box on the back of the original 948 engine, with 6 1/4" clutch, so had to bolck 2 holes and drill/tap 2 others to fit the 1098 cover. I used the original 948 fork, as I have done in the Toyota 5-spd conversion behind the current Midget based 1380.

The Moss cat. lists diff part nos for 948 & 1098 clutch forks. As far as I can remember the pivot holes are indifferent positions.
But I could be wrong
