rear brake cylinder dust covers

Some help needed please guys. Do the rubber dust boots for the rear brake cylinders fit from the outside through the backplate, or are they fitted over the part of the cylinders that projects through?
I have looked at so many exploded diagrams and still it is not clear to me. Nor am I able to tell from the old ones because there are none fitted at present. If fitted from outside through the backing plate that would seem more secure, but would it stop the movement of the brake cylinder. Yes, I could run without them at all, as is the case now, but I think they are supposed to be there, so why not have them?

They fit over a ridge in the back of the cylinder that protrudes through the backplate. You also have to route the handbrake arm through them.

Thanks PSL, that's a greta help.
I know, Mike, it is a little 'anorakie', but I am replacing everything else at the same time so might as well do it properly!

Most of the replacement ones you can buy these days don't fit well - and even if you manage to get them on - they soon deteriorate/spring off again..........
