traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
anybody on here ? seems a lot of money for a roofrack

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
ouch! I'm looking for a rack for my Minor (I'm a keen mountain biker and don't fancy continually completely disassembling my bike) any ideas on what's compatible? (I'd like to keep it as original as possible!) do you think I'll have to sell a kidney?

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
I'd have wanted a car fitted underneath it for that price....
Plenty of different period roofracks available at autojumbles and carboot sales, its just a case of finding one that you're happy with the looks and fittings. There's no 'proper' rack. I got a nice period looking one with wooden slats from a friend's girlfriend's mum's next door neighbour many years ago for £10. Restored it twice since then...

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
What about one of those bike racks that mount onto a tow bar?
The Traveller roof and gutters are far from ideal for roof rack fitting.

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
i think it woud be illegal to carry a bike on the roof
the ones marky b said about would be ideal even making one would be easy looking at them

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
why would you think carrying a bike on the roof would be illegal? thats crazy talk folk often have roof mounted bike racks, I dont really fancy fitting a tow bar ether, I've got one of those thule hang off the back types but I don't really trust the boot to stay on if it got windy
(I've a Minor, not a Traveller)

I shouldn't fancy putting a rack on a traveller roof, pretty as it might be!

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
The problem with fitting a roofrack to a traveller and then a heavy object such as a bike onto the rack, is that the roof rack has to clamp onto aluminium guttering, which was designed to hold the roof to the wooden structure but is not strong enough for much else!
The traveller guttering is actually not a particularly strong piece of structure and is only nailled through the roof!
Not designed for load bearing at all.

Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Re: traveller roofrack on ebay fetched £370
Yes, traveller roof guttering isnt really suitable for heavy loads... I use a towbar mounted bike rack, though not much choice at the moment with a convertible as daily driver!
Seeing the price of this one, I may have to do another refurb on my wooden slatted rack as its probably time for some fresh ash I suspect, though its not quite such a stylish shape as that one. I have a spare Paddy Hopkirk gutter mount rack if anyone needs one. Very sharp angular late 60s early 70s look. More suited to the Marina Coupe I used to use it on than a Minor i suspect.
I'd still reccomend boot sales as good hunting ground, as folk have a clearout and realise its about 2 decades since they had a car with roof gutters...

Rest assurd it is very secure. I am very particular about these things, I valuse my bikes as highly as my car.

Er... difficult one that. I do have two Minors now and the bike fleet has diminished somewhat.
