Carburettor overflow pipe

The carb on the Tourer ( Marina engine, larger carb) has an "overflow" pipe fitted from the float chamber....
is there any point in this?
Doesn't seem so to me, never seen one before & it surely will allow evaporation of the fuel especially when all is warm
Would it not be better plugged?
Chris

It's more a vent than an overflow. I just run a pipe safely away from the exhaust down the bulkhead. not wise to block it off completely.

Certainly DO NOT block it!

Thanks for the quick replies!
Yes, the pipe does run well clear of the exhaust
and
No, clearly I should not block it...so I won't
thanks again

My MGB has these and when your float chamber needle sticks you will find out how useful they are. They pour petrol on the floor instead of in your engine bay.

Keep petrol well away from the wheels, it's quite a lubricant. My brother had a faulty needle valve on a carb in his Midget once, went straight at a roundabout (at low speed) and bounced off two kerbs ending up with three flat tyres - not a happy bunny!
