Hi Guys,

I think I may already know the answer to this one. When cleaning up the battery tray and bulkhead area, for rustproofing and repainting, I've discovered some "Bitumastic" type under seal between the tray bulkhead interface. Is this usual? I'm working on the assumption (dangerous I know) that it shouldn't be there. This "underseal" type material covers the area the horizontal brace of the bulkhead along to the seam of the inner wing/bulkhead area.

What is the best way to proceed with this problem?

I would expect to find this type of stuff on the back of the battery box holding some rubber or plastic sheet to cover the big hole back there.
Along to the seam of the inner wing/bulkhead area, not too sure, if there is some there on my car it has been painted over with body colour when it was made.
Maybe an early for of seam sealer?

These seams were factory brush sealed with hot bitumen. The bitumen was also used elsewhere on the bodyshell and to stick the card hole filling trims to the shell.

As MarkyB says this was applied before painting.

Does anyone know if you can paint over modern seam sealer?

If it's the type of sealer than comes in a tin and you paint on, rather than the pump tube type then the answer is yes it can be painted over.

I've already primed the inner wing and bulkhead on one side, I may just top coat and seam seal after that.
