The speedo on my MM keeps stopping working, I think the square must be very worn and the new cable keeps slipping in it. If I take it out and refit it all it works for a few miles then you hear it begin to slip and stop altogether. Any ideas how to fix this or will I try another speedo? My brother reckons to bond it in place but I dont like that idea!

Try a spare speedo. Does the mileometer stop as well?
For testing purposes the cable should fit a M1000 speedo.

Could you use match sticks to take up any gaps between cable and drive gear to give more bite?

That sounds like an entry for "Botch of the Week"

After only a mere 5 months Ive finally looked at this..........

I took the dash off to find that the new cable (2000ish miles ago) had broken about an inch down from were it screws on to the speedo head. Next i took out the speedo and the needle appeared to be stuck. I tried a screwdriver in the square at the back and it moved freely but wouldnt turn the needle, took the glass off and the needle was stuck to the pin that it rests on. Once freed it would move normally but kept sticking each time it returned. I looked at my spare speedo and it seemed to have a plastic or rubber cover over this pin. A small piece of wire of black wire cover sorted this and a 2nd hand Minor 1000 cable and all seems to be working again.

Ahhhhhhh! The sticky, black rubber sleeve-thing stuck to the needle on ours, too. Remove rubber, paint with black paint and.....voila!
Must be an 'age' thing for the rubber bits.

Hi David, Would I be right in thinking that you repair MM speedos? I have one that indicates the speed no problem but will not count the miles being travelled. Any suggestions. Welcome your feedback. Regards.....spike

You will probably find that the fibre cog that drives the mileometer is worn. Remove the two screws at the back of the case to inspect

The grease they packed them with goes solid and the fibre cog strips it's teeth...
