5th gear on my mgf is abit iffy. when i pop it into 5th, it jumps back out every 4 or 5th time u change into that gear. i can overcome this by slowly increasing the revs instead of quickly.
would this indicate that 5th gear is knackered or on the way?

Sounds like it - unless there is a mounting problem and the engine is moving about and pulling itself out of gear. But in reality - I know nothing of these cars! I believe the engine is in the REAR .........????

First course of action is to get onto www.mg-rover.org and ask the Mgf guys on there, but sounds very much to me like its up the creek

oh dear, i thought it was, but was in denial. well considering i too know nothing of these modern new fangled rear engined cars, and 5th gear is a relatively new invention to me, ill take it to my local mechanic after he has finished with primrose (its week 3 now, but he did blind himself with the aid of an angle grinder and my rear spring hanger) and let him have a fettle
