should there be a sealing (copper) washer on the front hoses where they screw into the cylinder?

Yes, there should be a copper washer, these are essential or the cylinder to hose connection will leak.

cheaply available from the usual suppliers (BM, ESM etc)

thanks, i thought there should be but they wern,t fitted on my old hoses
