I have just started restoration of a Series 2 Traveller and I am in the stripping down phase. I plan to replace the engine, probably with a 1098. I am curious as to what size engine is currently in the car and can’t make sense of the engine number. The engine is a Gold Seal unit and the number starts SRA3 R-J. (It has a spin-on type filter which doesn’t seem to be a modification.) Any ideas please? Thanks, Tony

If it has a spin-on filter - mounted high up on the block above the dizzy - then it's a Marina/Ital 1275 cc engine. However - if its a spin-on filter mounted low down on the side/middle of the block - it's an 803 cc engine i'm afraid...........

Thanks, yes it is low down on the block.

Does it spin on horizontally (803cc) or vetically up to a horizontal face? The vertical spin-on was standard on the 1275, but can be retrofitted to both 948 and 1098.

Looking at the exhaust side of the engine are there any plates or cast numbers just behind the front engine plate?

Do you have any pictures of the engine bay?

Such anti 803 sentiment! Granted they are underpowered for the Morrie, but I wouldn't be tearing my hair out. Don't know about the UK but here in Aust the 803's are sought after by folks who want to keep their car original as they are becoming very scarce. Pop it on Ebay, you might be surprised at what it fetches!

Again, don't know about the UK, but here in Australia the Series II Traveller is VERY rare - especially if it is a "Cheesegrater"! Personally I'd be keeping it original and maybe getting a second car if you want to go fast.......
