Dear All,
From reading other threads ,it appeares that i dont have a "Gearbox Tension Cable" or "Steady Cable" ,i have what appeares to be a Earth Cable from gearbox to cross member but no steady cable,were all models fitted with this cable (mines a 61 fitted with 1098 engine and ribbed gearbox) and would it make much difference with or with out it ? Thanks in advance !

The gearbox tension cable prevents the engine straining forward under heavy braking and stops the fan from hitting the radiator. It would be a wise move to fit one.

Definitely should be one there. When at rest there should be a small amount of slack in the cable. It is not designed to be tight and pull the box backwards, but (as above) to stop the assembly moving forwards under heavy deceleration.

Early cars didn't have it - presumably because they a) couldn't go fast and b) couldn't stop quickly either!

The MM side valve engine was installed with decent engine/gearbox mounts which held the engine in the correct position.
