Hi folks, I wonder if there is someone out there who can tell me what the narrow plate on the nearside front bulkhead(on the opposite side and higher than the oval plate) refers to? It has a five figure number and some other symbols which are barely discernable. Thankyou.

A good sharp digital picture would help to identify it.

The ally strip is the body number. No I don't know what it refers to or why it is different to the chassis no.

As stated, it is the body number or more precisely the Nuffield Pressings Number. Modern build techniques dictate that all cars have a body number which now forms part of the chassis number. When Minors were built they had different numbers which didn't translate to each other. Originaly there would have been a plate on the front nearside tie plate with the same number on it and the Nuffield logo but many have long since rotted off.......

Such as this...?[frame]

The number reads "Z.26076". What does that mean? I promise it's a Z, it's been cross-checked with the narrow plaque in the top of the engine bay.

If you put some paint stripper on the box to the right of your Z ... number you will reveal the other part of the body number.
This is the same as on the plate on the bulkhead which also starts with the same Z... number reverse stamped on the left and normal stamped on the right.
The normally stamped numbers usually fill with paint and are then hard to read

100% certain it is a 59ish 2dr.
Z26076 is a 2dr body code
as the body number does NOT start with a "1" - as 2drs reached 350,000 when 4drs had yet to reach 200,000!
you should also have a "BME" number on the bulkhead...."BME ????" (lower than the body number)
Hope this helps
