Just thought Id share this with you all.
The gear lever for a 1098 box is actualy different to a lever for a 948 box.
I found this out when I replaced my old 948 box with a 1098 box. I just resued the old shiny lever instead of using the one off the new box which was a bit more scruffy.
While changing gear I always noticed how much you had to move the lever and how it just didnt feel right. It also didnt go in to reverse properly, it had to be whacked in quite hard.
I unscrewed the cover holding the lever in and compared both the levers and the 1098 lever has a longer pin on the bottom of the ball, and with the 948 lever it wasnt locating properly in the 1098 box.
So, moral of the story is......use the lever which comes with your box, not the one which looks the nicest

I did have an ex army Traveller for a short time (T registration!) and the gear lever in that was shorter than the normal. I was told that this was the practice for military vehicles. Don't know why, or if it's correct. Maybe someone just cut a bit off as an experiment.

Probably allows quicker gear change!

I think you are missing his point there? the BOTTOM section
of the gear lever,below the pivot ball, is different on a 1098 car
not the top section which would undoubtedly give a quicker gear
change if it was shorter.

I understood sjstyles about the bottom actuating pin being longer on the 1098 boxes, but I thought 57traveller was talking about the general length of the whole stick in their post. I could more than likely be wrong about this, but my repley was put in a jokey fasion

references to the 'shortened top section' might confuse some
readers. It seems easy to confuse some novices, I once
stated that Halfords were selling Black batteries( period looks)
and one chap thought that it meant that they had more power
if they were black. You've got to start somewhere eh?

I take it these batteries are OK then? I bit the bullet and bought one today (HB007).

I've had no problems with mine (the black heavy duty type 065?) since November 2001.

Ah, so it is just a case of "shorter lever, quicker 'throw' ". Like old manual rally cars.

I've had a Halfords battery on Riley for about 18 months - no problems leaving the car unused for up to a couple of months at a time etc... but it's early days yet.
The nice bit about the Halfords battery was that the label peeled straight off, so it now has no logos , just plain black.
I kept the big sticker anyway - just in case it plays up before the 3 years warranty runs out.

The Halfords batteries seem to last well and not just 3 years and one month! Their battery fitted in my saloon lasted just under five years, finally gave up the ghost last December.
Don't know if anyones checked but some of these so called "maintenance free" batteries do seem to benefit from and require the occasional top up with distilled water.

And they did blue ones that have peel off labels too - one is sitting under the bonnet of my Trafalgar Blue convertible
Incidentally they are good batteries. Doris has been idle for a year and the battery has kept it's charge well.
