Leak

Hi

I've got a leak that appears to be coming through the rubber around the windscreen. It is the bottom corner at the drivers side.

Can anyone recommend anything I can patch it up with until I can get the rubber replaced.

Thanks
Andy

You can try and use windscreen sealer but I have never had much joy with this. Really the new rubber is the best option and will be the cheapest in the long run. I used to leave a jug on the floor to catch the drips as it saves the carpet getting wet but you do have to remember to take it out before you kick all the water over the carpet  anyway.

Roof and gutter sealant solved the problem for me. It is a bit messy to start with but when it sets it provides a good seal.

How easy is it to fit the new rubber seal ?

Easy enough - provided you don't have a laminated screen! If it is a lammy screen - don't touch it - it WILL crack. Don't use washing up liquid as lubricant - better with KY jelly or similar. To get the chrome strip in neatly needs the special tool - to do it with screwdrivers is asking for trouble.

as bm says easy if you have done one or two before, safer and in the end cheaper (If you crack one) to get the rubber and then pay a winscreen fitter to do the work then if it still leaks or cracks their problem.

Thought that but then autoglass quoted me £70 !!

What would you say is a reasonable price ?

I was only charged £80 for doing a split screen. A one piece is a doddle by comparison

£70/80 is reasonable if you break a glass and have to get a new one :o

Blimey it's going to cost me £110 to sort out a small leak !!

But if you don't fix the leak and the water damages your carpet and causes your floor panels to rust it might end up costing you a lot more! :(

Roof and gutter sealant is looking like a much cheaper option.

As long as the screen is NOT laminated - it's easy and reasonably safe to do.

another option would be to join the club(If you haven't allready) theres bound to be someone in your local branch that has done rubber changes who would be prepared to help you with the change

Thanks, it doesn't say anything. It's a 1970 traveller

there must be a mark somewhere since I believe it was required by the construction and use regs to show that the screen was of the approved type either toughened or laminated with the type approval numbers.and i'm sure 1970 was after the year it was made compulsory, someone with a 70 traveller will be along shortly no doubt.
