Hi all i have just replaced my manifold as the old one was a bit sus.
Before the change over the engine which is a recon unit was running.Timing has not been touched everthing has remained the same bar the manifold the only thing i discovered was the carb piston was sticking see (carb hassle).This i have fixed and i have set the mixture two full turns from the top.
The engine is getting fuel as pump filled the float chamber and stoped then topped it up after a few hopeful cranks so that seems in order.
The ignition system is good, good strong blue spark at plugs which are in good condition and set .
Is it an air leak in the manifold which i fitted which is a good new one from club spares.
The only area which is in question is the starter motor which kicks back too quickly but was enought before hand for starting this i stripped and cleaned p.s i did not grease the pinoin any help would be great and may save my sanity many thanks Scott

I had this problem after changing my carb & manifold.

First pour some petrol down the throat of the carb, crank the engine over and see if you get any firing.

Next thing i did was to release the arm that fixes to the bottom of the jet assembly, pulled the jet right down, and then it started like that. re-fixing the jet, set the mixture, and everything worked after that. I think maybe there just wasn't enough of a vacuum when the needle was fully seated in the jet to pull petrol up through it.

firstly, never grease the starter pinion, it will jam eventually. leave it clean and dry. Graphite powder is the only lubricant suitable but not easily obtainable. Are you sure your timing is correct/, it could be a bit advanced, if the starter kicks out quickly. And just make sure your choke is actually working, the jet will move down about 3\8" to 1\2 " if it is.

A good substitute is a soft pencil lead.

Try a locksmith if it's hard to find.
