Indicators on 1960 car

Hello, all,

silly question; should my trafficators (still original semaphore type) be self-cancelling?

I think the actual indicator switch has been replaced, as it has a spring-loaded movement towards the wheel, perhaps a later headlamp flash type fitment?

regards

Dave

A 1960 car should have the later type indicator stalk with a green flashing light on the end and yes it should be self cancelling. Minors never had a headlamp flash fitment.

If the car still has trafficators then the warning light will not flash as there is no flasher unit.
Not sure about the self cancelling, the early 2 doors did not self cancel, the early 4 doors had a timer switch.

Very true it will not flash if you still just have the trafficators but all stalks with the green light on the end were self cancelling and they were introduced to all models in 1959.

hmmm this bears investigation as my indicators don't self-cancel..... thanks for all the replies folks, does anyone have any knowledge of the mechanics of the self cancel mechanism?

I find that moving the indicator switch with my hand is the best method :)

A million thanks for that priceless pearl Mike, how fortunate you are only about 30 minutes drive from me; I'll not use too much fuel when I come and let your tyres down!  :)

Dave

On a more serious note, there is no diagram of what SHOULD be within the steering column in the official manual so don't know what I am looking for; on the early '60's Vauxhalls there were metal pins that tripped a lever on the switch as the wheel returned to the straight-ahead position; does anyone know if something similar is used on Minors?

Cheers

On the 1098 indicators there is a peg on the steering column that self cancels the arm. On Series 11 Land Rovers there was a wheel that turned against the steering column. Probably all totally irrelevant
If you are that close you are welcome to call in and I can impart some more pearls of wisdom :)

Thanks Mike,

I'm in West Drayton so not far at all; I will pull the wheel off and take a look to see if there is anything obvious missing broken or merely out of place, I cannot see it being too different from the 1098 type but you never know.....

Will take you up on your offer of pearls at some point thanks!
