Starting Problems

When I first start the car from cold it takes quite a few turns off the starter motor before it fires and requires a pump or two on the throttle pedal, but it does eventually start. Once the engine has warmed up it starts up again, after being switched off, no problem.

Any advice appretiated as always :D

Sounds like the choke needs adjusting. Does it fast idle when started with the choke out?

When it actually starts it runs fine, I don't think it is the choke that needs adjusting. I thought the starter motor was on it's way but like I said when it's warm it starts straight away :-?

If the starter turns the engine over slow when cold it could be the starter or battery. If it turns over as fast as when starting from warm, then it is probably the choke. You did say you have to pump the throttle, you shouldn't need to do this if the choke is operating correctly.

If you have an SU fitted all pumping the throttle pedal will do is exercise your leg.

You need to work out the optimum amount of choke to start the engine when it's cold.
On mine it's 2 clicks or about an inch of choke.

I think I've figured it out. The choke wasn't coming out as far as it used to it seems, a hard pull seemed to pull it out that little click more and it started first time. So popped the bonnet, oiled the choke mechanism on the carb and all is operating smoothly again :D

Hopefully this has sorted it 8)
