Noisy 803cc Gearbox

Hi
I have a late type Series II with an 803cc engine and gearbox. The car has lain idle for 20 years and I have recently got her back on the road. I changed the oil in the gearbox and put in Castrol 30SAE just like it says in the workshop manual and 90EP gear oil in the back axle.

I'm getting a vibration at speeds over 40mph and the gearbox is very noisy in 1st and when sitting with the engine ticking over in neutral. The noise goes away if I push the clutch. It was fine in 1990! The workshop manual says it could be
  • low oil
  • damaged gear teeth
  • worn bearings in the layshaft
Although I'll check I'm pretty sure it's not the oil, I cant think the gear teeth would cause noise in neutral.

Has anybody got any other suggestions

Thanks!

Culp

most likely layshaft bearings as the noise goes when you press the clutch pedal in.

Hmm yes, it seems like that could be the case

I've only just got her back on the road, I don't fancy taking her off the road to get the gearbox out and then pull that to bits

The vibration might be from a propshaft joint.

If the gearbox was OK in 1990 it shouldn't have deteriorated very much, unless it was stored outside.
