Hi

I'm looking at getting a battery charger.

What type do I need to get.

i.e can I get away with a £20 one or does it need to be around £50.

I don't see why you need to spend £50 a simple cheap one will still charge your battery overnight. Good enough for most jobs.

Actually I don't like the big booster chargers.

As an aside I refurbished my battery charge at the weekend and fitted new leads and clips. I remember buying it to charge the six volt battery on my BSA A10 in 1973!!!

it depends on whether you just need an occasional boost charge, in which case a small 4 amp cheap charger will do fine.

If you lay your car up in the winter look at some of the more expensive electronically controlled chargers that will maintain the battery while it's laid up without overcharging it.

From experience stay away from Argos own brand (Challange) the quality is poor.
I have found to my cost that buyin cheap products is false economy.

These are not cheap but are excellent for classics. You can leave them connected if the car is laid up or garaged and they will recover a badly discharged battery.

I now have two as I use one where I keep my motorbikes!!

Just give the car a quick charge every few weeks.

Got the charger and it turns out I need a new battery.

What sort should I get (the current one is quite small).

I also need a better negative connection can anyone help me with that one as well, the current one is too large for the existing battery.

Sounds like you have a positive terminal fitted on the negative lead (they are bigger) just pop into your local motor factors and buy a ready made cable for a few quid or just a terminal, most are universal these days, start small but will open up big.

I've just reserved these two items.





A couple of questions, do I simply cut the cable to remove one of the ends and then feed it into clip.

Is a 9" cable long enough (I haven't got my car with me to check !!), the other option is 18" but that would be really long.
