I've seen them mentioned in various places... and I know Jonathon teams them up with Zetec engines... but could you just bolt one into a standard Minor? Or maybe a minor with a 1275 Ital/Marina/Spridget engine? Would you have to change the rear axle, or the diff?

You can't just 'bolt it on' - it needs a special bellhousing to mate to the A series block - and a specific clutch plate - and then a method to operate the clutch - and a special crossmember to support it - and a special propshaft to match it to the back axle - and a special speedo drive cable and probably a different (or recalibrated) speedo......... It's not a cheap conversion.

Not worth it, then?

That's up to you to decide.

Any 5 speed conversion will entail more or less the same amount of work.

Does anyone know what would be involved in putting the gear cluster from a 5 speed into a 4 speed box?

Some machining obviously as another gear needs to be accommodated, or are modern gears smaller?
