Removing window rubbers

Post by GeorgeHurst »

Hi there,

I am clued up on how to install windows, but I can't for the life of me work out how to remove them without cutting them out!

The rear side windows (2 door saloon) seem like with enough peeling back and pushing they could come out fairly easily and the rear possibly the same. But I have just cant see how to get the front screen out, the Haynes manual says to give it a smart whack with the palm of your hand, but that acheives nothing!

Any ideas? Really keen not o cut them out and replace them as they are in very good condition.

Its a fiddly job!! Using a screw driver just start pushing back the rubber at a corner and basically work your way around, I would be very wary of whacking it......... For the front obviously work from the inside and the rear work from the outside.

Remember patience is a virtue and should be practiced for this job if you dont want to break the glass :o

George
A two person ( maybe three to make it easy ) job for sure...one " catcher" required.I would do the reverse of installation, insert cord with a blob of vaseline every now and then under the rubber as you work your way around. Then attach a small wooden dowel/ stick/screwdriver to the cord and gently pull ....pushing the glass in the required direction. The third person, if available, could exert continous gentle pressure on the glass, whilst you ease the rubber seal.

The fact that the seal is relatively new should mean that it is still reasonably flexible ? Fingers crossed...David's thoughts echoed...patience, patience, softly , softly.

Good luck

Thanks both for the comments, Bob I very much like the technique of using cord to get it out as well. I think that is what I will try. I'll get someone ready to 'catch' and then put cord the whole way round and pull it out whilst pushing the screen.
Muchos gracias!
Fingers crossed!
