Errant Windcreen Wipers

Hi Guys,

The windscreen wipers on my '69 4 door are errant to say the least. They either slap the windscreen rubber on full sweep or decide that they only want to wipe approximately 1/4 of the screen.

Is this a problem with the wheel boxes or the motor itself. I have a "spare" 150 degree wiper motor I can use as a replacement should it be needed.

Thanking you in advance

John

It's probably a combination of tired rack, work wiper arms, and aged wheelboxes. Check the arms for play and replace if required. With the arms removed, mark the spindles on the wheelboxes (felt tip pen) and then remove the rack (it pulls out from the motor end). Now turn the spindles through 180 degrees and fit a new rack and replace the (possibly new) arms.

It's also worth thoroughly cleaning the screen to make sure that the blad4es are not sticking to it - new blades can help too. Don't use proprietary screen cleaners, a small amount of toothpaste as a grinding compound thoroughly rinsed off is by far the best. About the only thing that probably won't be worn is the motor itself.

Check that the wheel boxes are securely tightened onto the rack. Any free movement of the outer casing will cause erratic wiper movement
