Help!

Trying to fit the back window into my project car.

Already smashed one window trying to fit it!

Morris 1000, seal from ESM.

All seems to fit fine apart from the bottom corners. Just seem to stick out.

Tried using string in the groove for lip to sit in, fine, and then another bit of string to pull the rest in leaving the outer rubber out of the car. Doesnt work.

It cant be that hard to fit the rear window! Can it?!

Any help from any one would be well appreciated!

Rear windows should be fitted from the inside using the "well Lubricated para chord" method to pull the outer seal over the lip of the bodywork. You need to be careful though as the corners do tend to bind up a bit and the chord can get stuck on the clips that hold the headlining to the body.....

the screen just looks too big to go in from the inside. tried it and gave up doing it that way.

Well I've fitted a few over the years and they definately go inside out (unlike the fronts which go outside in)

front went in really easily.

Is there a guide any where for fitting the rear window?

You just had it - from PSL! Inside out is the way - and yes - it's not easy.

Its a two person job, one inside pushing the screen up and the other outside pulling the string, being very careful on the corners. I usually lubricate the string with something like faiy liquid, fit into the rubber and then when your pulling the string wear thick gloves to stop it cutting into your hands. Take your time and you should have no problem!!

Even better than thick gloves ....use a short length of wooden dowel, or even a screwdriver if you are desparate, tied to the string/ cord.
You can get a good "controlled pull " on the cord and as stated before " gently does it" if you don't want to rip /tear the rubber.

Just attempted this about 6 times....wife getting really fed up. Using the method above but with no luck. Is it possible that the new seal is much thicker/bigger than the old and the window wont fit? Also, where is the best place to start with the cord, top, bottom or either side?
Also, I presume that the window should be pushed up flush, rather than trying to fit one side then the other, is this correct?

We usually start top centre, using washing line (the cord is inside the plastic) this is slightly thicker than normal cord but softer so doesn't rip the rubber seal. Fit window as said from inside and push to outside. Person outside the car is in charge of pulling the cord slowly down and around to the centre bottom. Person inside keeping up the pressure on the glass. Slowly bring the cable down and then up again to top. Washing up liquid helps lubricate the cord. Hope this helps. It's hard work on the hands. Take your time.

Thanks for the advice. Rear window and both rear sides now fitted. Wife and daughter both pushed into service.

I'm giving then a couple of days off before we attempt the windscreen. I presume this also fits from the inside out.
I have fitted the finishing strips to windscreens and rear windows on minis and have the correct tool, so not concerned about that.

No...windscreen is the other way, windscreen goes "in" from the outside.
You've acquired the technique now so the windscreen should be easy for you.
Remove the rear view mirror, if fitted already, to give you more room with the cord.

... and you'll need ear defenders against the language. The front screen is bigger and heavier! Pleased to hear you managed it.

Thanks. The rear view mirror, wipers and sunvisors are yet to be fitted. I have tried to keep everything clutter free until
I get the windows back in. At least with it going out to in, some of the weight will be supported on the frame.

Yeah - just change places. Pushers outside you inside. Don't know whether you've got the seats in but it may help. Kneeling on the bare metal floor and pulling is killing on the knees

Cheers, yes I put the interior back together. It made fitting the rear windows easier as well.

Not sure the daughter should be complaining after all of the work and recent engine rebuild I have done on her Riley Elf.

Just a quick question, slightly off topic. When I removed the rear side windows, one of them had a strange shaped clip on
the front edge, presumably to stop the window popping out. The other side was missing. Whilst I was ordering some new brakes, I asked them about these clips, they had never heard of them (Supplier advertising in Morris Matters). Do you need these clips?
If so what are they called and where can you get them?
