Can anyone out there tell me what material a 1098 engine back plate is made from, it apears to be cast of some type. I want to weld a couple of large bolts through it, don't ask! well not yet anyway, all will be revealled later

I have made the crank hole larger with a small angle grinder and an arc with chain drillings close together and snapped off the unwanted piece and it has the appearance of broken cast iron but cast iron I think would not have the strength, does cast steel have the same look about it ?

Yes - we think it's some kind of cast steel. They crack quite easily - and often - especially if the bolts to the gearbox are left a bit loose. I expect you are wanting to use it on a 1275 engine........
