having just bought a nice set of wolseley brakes, i thought i would make a start on overhauling the cylinders with the new seal i have got.
HOWEVER,
upon closer inspection, i dont think they are wolseley brake cylinders. they do look like morris ones.
here is a pic of my cylinders

and below that, a pic from ebay of actual wolseley brake cylinders (these match my set of new rubber seals)

If they fit the Wolesely back plates then they are Wolseley, if the back of the cylinder is too long to go through the slot then they are probably Morris. No problem, the Minor cylinders are just as good and a damn site cheaper. Locate the cylinder so that the large securing bolt and hole line up then extend the slot in the backplate and reposition the hole for the small securing bolt. You will probably also need new linking pipes

Certainly LOOK like Minor cylinders! Are you sure these are 9" brakes ? I would have expected the back plate to shown signs of modification where the cylinder fits on - let's see the other side - and perhaps a picture with cylinder removed from the backplate. The Minor cylinders are slightly larger diameter bore than W cylinders - so you may find the pedal load quite low, and the front wheels tending to lock up before the rears do any significant braking. I solved this by fitting the old original shoes - instead of the brand new shoes I had in stock. Made a huge difference!

The 9 in drums look obviously bigger than 8 in drums and the adjuster hole is not central between the wheel studs.

when i get back from work at the castle this afternoon ill whip off one of the cylinders and take a picture as well as a picture of the back plate. and just to reassure myself, ill compare the drum to one of the front ones on primrose.
if lady luck is on my side today, they might of been converted to moggy cylinders, which will save some faff with me doing it

I don't obviously see where the backplate has been modified to take the Minor cylinders - have you determined it is 9" wide ? The cylinders certainly LOOK like Minor cylinders......

i measured the backplate today and it was a good 9 inch and the drum had an inner diameter of just a smidge under 9inch, so unless another car used 9inch front brakes with morris minor cylinders, i am at a bit of a loss. maybe from an early marina or a very early wolseley 1500 or a riley 1.5.

The bores of the Minor and Wolesley cylinders are different - Minor is 15/16" (0.9375") and Wolesley is 0.8". Which size are yours?

0.8" = 20.3mm
15/16" (0.9375") = 23.8"
Sounds like they could be Minor?

well safe to say, i have been properly screwed this time. they are morris minor front brakes and the most expensive second hand morris brakes known.
so, i have a duff set of brakes, a significantly lighter wallet and a bad mood.

If the inside diameter of the drum is 9", as you said at the beginning of the post, they are not from a Minor, but almost certainly Wolesley, which is what you are looking for, isn't it?
The outside diameter of the backplate will be around 10".
Do you have the shoes? If so, putting them in place on the cylinders should give a dimension over the outside of the shoes of around 9".

Post a photo of the brake drum and I will tell you what you have.

i measured the inside diameter incorrectly before, i measured the total diameter instead, the actual inner diameter is bang on 8inch, and the drum is exactly the same size as my brakes on the car.
so, they are morris.
