Wicliffe motor company ltd. - Stroud, Gloucestershire

Post by Sidney'61 »

According to the heritage certificate this is the garage that my 1961 2-door (originally registered 3899 FH) was delivered to when new so I was wondering if anybody had any more information on the garage or any photos.
A quick google search showed that it was a nissan dealer up until recently but google maps revealed that it now looks like this, which is rather disappointing [frame]Image[/frame] It's a long shot but if anybody knows anything about this garage/company I'm interested to hear it.

Edit - I've just found a newspaper article about their closure in 2007 http://findarticles.com/p/news-articles ... n48125285/ aparently they've been around since 1907 but on those premises since 1970.

Wicliffe motors were main agents for Austin/Morris They were based in Gloucester in the early 60s and opened a second garage at Stroud around end of 60s. I think i have a photo of early site in glos will have a look for it over the weekend

Thanks Dave I look forward to seeing the photo, mine apparently came from the garage in Stroud in June 1961 so it must have already been open by then..

Are you sure of 3899 FH being registered in Stroud?

'FH' is a Gloucester city mark (Wall's ice cream of Gloucester all carried 'FH' until '74)

'AD','DD','DF' & 'DG' were Gloucester(shire) marks (Black & White coaches of Cheltenham)

Bit of a puzzle?

First regd in Gloucester, then transferred to their Stroud garage?

Chris
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Yes it is Gloucester mark, I assume there was not a DVLA office actually in Stroud so any vehicles sold there would be registered in the nearest office which is Gloucester.
