Electronic Fuel Pump

Post by DuncanBeaumont »

Having had a problem with my car not starting due to pitted points (now sorted), I have been thinking of fitting a new fuel pump.

Looking at ESM's web site I see that electronic SU fuel pumps are now available. Does anyone have any experience of these? Presumably no points, they look identical to the electric pump and are the same price £69.50.

Are they reliable?

Personally I wouldnt bother with electronic petrol pumps.

They are probably more reliable in the first instance but like all things electronic, electronics eventually stop working and your pump doesnt work. At least with the old contact breaker type, although they may carbon up after a few years a quick flick or clean and your up and running again. Something you wouldnt have been able to do with an electronic pump.

You can always buy a rebuild kit from burlens to rebuild your existing pump and you get the new kits supplied with suppessors to help prevent the arcing across the points which causes the carbon buildups. Thats what Im running at the moment and touch wood the pickups been running great and she in the garage untouched a lot of the time.

Some years ago there was a batch a faulty electronic units, but recent ones have been completely reliable. I've had three in use for around two years - but I still carry a spare pump "just in case".

Don't touch the electronic pump (from any supplier) with a long stick! Just use a nice reliable points type SU. They seem to last ~ 40 years.
