I recently replaced the Moggy's fuel tank. After that the fuel pump has gone wild, ticking faster that ever and when I had a look at the tank I noticed a tiny leak where the pipe is connected to the tank. I suppose that's what the pump was trying to tell me. Probably it was sucking a lot of air instead of petrol. I have tried to tighten the pipe but that doesn't seem to make a differance. Now I am thinking of two ways to solve this - either put a rubber ring between the tank and pipe and tighten it lighter than now or buy a tube of some kind of sealant and try to use as little as possible to avoid blocking the fuel line completely. Has anyone got a better solution?

I had a leak in the same place, on inspection I found that the fitment on the end of the pipe had become detatched (they are soldered/brazed on).
You can either re-braze it on.
Or as I did use petropatch putty to seal it up, I did this as a temporary measure till my new fuel line arrived and its been good for the past two weeks so I shall leave mine as is now even though I now have a new line to fit.

As above - best inspect it carefully - you don't want to risk any damage to that new tank.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to see if there is anything similar to petropatch putty sold here in Sweden. I do have a gas tube for soldering but I don't think I have the skills to make it properly. I'll wait a few days before I do anything. I took the Moggy for the Swedish MOT inspection yesterday and they noticed the rear break hose looked like it was made of Bassett's Liquorice. I have ordered a new hose from the UK so I might as well take care of both problems when I am under the car fitting the brake hose.

Might be worth removing the connection at the tank & inspecting it & the tank outlet for any damage or dirt . Thinking that it is a new tank , maybe the outlet has paint in it perhaps not permitting the ' cone ' fittihg to seal correctly . Last thought , how old and in what condition is the pipe near the fitting ? you may have weakened it when removing it . Good luck Andy

The tank was bought second hand from a man who had given up restoring his Moggy after a few decades. So, all parts are 53 years old and as far as I have seen everything looks absolutely okay. I will have a closer look at both the end of the pipe and see what it looks like in the hole. Before I fitted the "new" tank I brushed it and painted it. I don't think I spilled any paint in the connection hole but I will have a look to be on the safe side.
