Marking on Block

I have just re-fitted a new head and gasket to my 1098 but the temperature gauge got frighteningly high and it started to sound like a tractor again.
I have taken the head off once more as I suspected the head gasket had gone again, but it hadn't. The head looks fine but there are a couple of marks on the block between the 3rd and 4th piston which won't come off however much I scrape.

Any ideas if this could be the cause? It almost looks like the block may have been repaired at some stage.

Does look a bit odd - but as long as it's flat across there (use a steel rule on edge) it will be fine.

It almost looks like the block has been repaired at that spot and the 2 cylinders sleeved.
Try polishing it w/steel wool or Scotch-brite and see what it looks like then.
