help...ive got an early 1300 not plus engine in my moggie which is running rough ever since i bought it .ive found out that the distributor fitted a 59d4 is out of a 998 mini or metro.can anyone tell me if a25d4 would work. ive also got a45d4 that wont fit into the clamp ,is this off a plus engine.

59D's are for the A+ engine. An older 1275 should run fine on a 25D or 45D.....

the 45 doesnt fit the clamp.it has a step in theshaft and is too small.

I think mini & mini metro distributors had a forked clamp that was held with one bolt and the a series distributors have an oval shaped clamp with 2 bolts securing it and a screw on top to clamp the the distributor tight.

The mini metro one I tried using wasn't long enough to reach the driving dog from the cranksaft so maybe check that the crank does turn your distributor and that the static timing is set correctly.

If you can take a photo of what you have fitted and post it up here then you might get so better advice.

Well - the 25 and the 45 will fit! The 45 is the later/better dizzy. I don't see how a 59 is being used - unless it has been modified.

there is a different drive shaft in place ie smaller. i do have a new drive shaft for the 45 .

You should try swapping to the 45 distributor and verify the static timing is OK and then see what happens. If it runs well then you have found the solution but if not then it's back to the drawing board.

It IS possible to use the 59 dizzy - with as you say - the later A+ style drive shaft. If you want to go back to a 25 or 45 - you will need the earlier drive shaft.

Are you sure that the rough running is caused by the distributor?
Static timing OK?
All high tension wires OK?
Rotor and cap OK?
Vacuum advance unit?
Coil and connections?
Carburetor?
Intake manifold gaskets?

Compression test!!

all compresion tests are good no air leaks on the inlet manifold new leads and cap,the 45 has a shorter drive shaft so wont reach the drive shaft off the cam.

It will - if it has the correct drive dog fitted - and the correct drive shaft coming up from the cam! 45 D dizzy is a straight swop for the 25D.
