MM gearbox design origins?
Does anyone know where the MM gearbox design emerged from? MG, Morris, Hotchkiss, etc?

Well I think the original running gear came straight from the Morris 8 Series E but started life in the original Morris 8.
But backtracking to the first Morris Minor I came across this which may give you a clue Rob.

the running gear was designed at one of the company's subsidiaries, EG Wrigley, a Birmingham-based gearbox maker who had been bought out of receivership and renamed Morris Commercial Cars.

I was wondering if the MM gearbox components are metric or whit. I've a remote gearstick conversion from a Series 2 M8 but was idly wondering how I might need to make up some longer hold-down studs for it but they might be metric/whit mixed like the Hotchkiss-derived M8 engine.
My left hand doesn't work too well so a shorter stick on a remote, like the 1098, would be handy. I'm fairly certain that it also goes through the same hole as the MM gearstick so I wouldn't need to make any cuts.

Sounds like an interesting modification. The easiest solution would be to measure some threads with a thread gauge.
Earlier boxes were 3 speed?

I can't remember the sizes of the bolts (I rebuilt one 3 months ago) although the input and output shaft bearings are metric and the tailshaft bearing is Inch sized. I would imagine they are metric (the bolts) the drain plug is. I can get the sizes when I'm back at the shop next week.

BTW: The transmission in the MG TF is very much like the MMs.

Looks like the MGPA is as well. I've been recently informed that this remote is from a P-type.
