I did a stupid thing...

Hello everyone.
The centre-push horn on my 1964 duotone 4 door was only working sporadically, so after taking off the horn-push itself I "lifted out" the contact thing from the centre of the column (the bit that contacts under the actual push). Now I've got a contact with 3" of wire attached (it ends in a flat brass disk about 3 or 4mm across) and cant see how on earth to rewire or plug it back in.
Do I have to rewire the whole thing or am I missing something obvious? If I do have to rewire how on earth do I get a wire up the middle of the steering column?
Any help, suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Billy (Minor newbie)
