Fuel Gauge

Post by Alex'n'Ane »

Posted for a friend: My fuel gauge is only reading half full, even when the tank is brimmed to the top. Other than the sender, what other possible issues could there be causing this?

This happened to my car after the tank had been out, the sender unit had been fitted 1/4 turn out
causing the float to foul on the tank internal baffle plate. (bit scary draining a full petrol tank) !

CAN ONLY REALLY BE THE SENDER TRY TAKING THE WIRE OFF THE SENDER (NORMALLY IF THEY FAIL OR A WIRE IS BROKEN OR THE GAUGE ITSELF HAS GONE THE DO NOT MOVE FROM THE BOTTOM) AND PUTTING IT TO EARTH WITH ANOTHER WIRE JOINED IF YOU HAVE TO (MAKE SURE ITS A BRIGHT GOOD EARTH) IF THE GAUGE GOES ALL THE WAY UP TO THE TOP (PEEK THROUGH THE BACK WINDOW) ITS THE SENDER NOT GOING ITS FULL TRAVEL IT SOMETIMES HAPPENS WHEN A CAR HAS STOOD A LONG WHILE WITH THE FUEL LEVEL THE SAME (GETS CRUD ON THE THREADS NEEDS CLEANING AND FREEING OFF) OR IF THE SENDER IS HITTING A TANK BAFFLE (NEEDS ROTATING) WITHIN THE TANK HOPE THIS HELPS :D[frame]Image[/frame]

Im having a similar problem with my fuel guage. It will read up to half way, but no higher. Im wondering if it could be the float bashing against an internal part of the tank. Does anyone have a pic of what position the gauge should be located in ? :D
