I am thinking of fitting a magnetic sump plug to my 1275 sprite engine that has recently been reconditioned and fitted to my van. I found one on ebay that states that it has a 5/8 inch UNC thread. Does anyone know if this is the right size for the job?

Can't see the need myself........ and sorry - no idea about the thread.

My wifes mini sprite has a magnetic sump plug as standard fitment (auto box and torque converter shares oil with the engine!)

Dont know what the thread is though and it may be a different plug on the mini

You could ask the usual mini spares suppliers.

Oh yes - it's an essential on a Mini - with gears shedding shards almost constantly! But no need on a Minor.

I highly doubt that the thread is UNC. Most all sump plugs are fine thread of one sort or another.

The Mini one goes into the alloy gearbox casing - it very probably IS a UNC thread - although I can't confirm its' size. The Minor one is certainly NOT UNC!!!

Perhaps you could get 1 or 3 of those really strong little pill magnets off Ebay and epoxy them to the bottom of the existing plug (Ie the outside not inside) to make it magnetic

I don't think that would be very effective. Have heard of strong magnets on the oil filter but probably highly debatable.

Magnets ex hard drives seem to be popular on the filter casing on Minis - but really don't see the need on a Minor - but - can't do any harm!

A "pill" magnet on the inner end of the sump plug will work as intended and you will be able to see how much it has picked up every time you do an oil change.
As Roy says, it wont do any harm.

I've got a hard drive magnet on the sump near the drain plug as I've got lots laying around* and it can only do good.
The catch is that I wont be able to tell if it has without removing the sump.




*Another use I intend to use one of these magnets for is to put some timing marks where I can see them standing up.

Very old thread this but the OP's question was never answered. I am going to do an oil change soon and I thought I would fit a magnetic sump plug just to keep an eye out for unexpected engine wear.

The answer for an A-series engine that does not share oil with the gearbox e.g the Minor (but not the Mini) is 1/2" UNF (20 TPI). Broadly speaking, there are 2 options; a standard magnetic sump plug (which ESM and Holden sell but currently out of stock) or a "Gold Plug" which is considerably more expensive but has a very strong Neodymium magnet (Gold Plug AP-01).

Might be of some use to someone searching threads one day.

You could drill the standard sump plug and epoxy one of those magnets in? It would be much cheaper than a "Gold Plug".

I made one for the gearbox, drilled a 8mm hole in the original plug then epoxied a 8mm magnet in the hole and peened the edges over while the epoxy was still wet.
