Registration with V5

I have a friend who's just bought a wreck to rebuild. He has the V5 but the cars not been used since 1989, Can he just send the V5 off and register as the new keeper? It's a `68 traveller and he wants to keep the original number if possible. Any advice greatly appreciated. Simon

Shouldn't be a problem. I suggest you talk to the DVLA and of course your friend will now have to declare SORN on the vehicle as it has changed ownership (otherwise big fine when he comes to tax it). If there is any concerns about identity etc the MMOC can offer support to members to help out in these matters - You will need to contact the office in Derby for this service....

If the car hasn't been taxed or sorned since 1998 there's no need to declare sorn on it even after a change of keeper. If you do it's just something else to remember every year to renew it (then if you forget they'll fine you).

I'm not sure that's right. Once you've swapped your old logbook for a V5C at change of keeper it triggers the need for taxation or SORN, at least that's what I understand.

Not if the date of liability (most recent tax or sorn declaration) was before 1998.

Recommend you photocopy the V5 before you send the original to DVLA - they are very good at loosing them!
The V5 is no longer a valid document - and many if not all seem to end up 'lost in the system' at DVLA.
If it was me I'd take a scan of it as well as a photocopy!!
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
On the plus side, the reg details will all be on the computer so if the normal process fails you will still be able to get a V5C eventually.

If you have a V5 - send it off and change the details. But DO NOT attempt to change engine number details or capacity (if they aren't right) until you have a valid tax disc on the car! May as well declare sorn - they do send you a reminder - so it's not easy to forget to renew it.
