We are currently trying to get our Morris, Betsy, on the road to transport my sons bride to the church next weekend, but have had a few hiccups along the way so can someone please HELP!!!
The bottom engine was totally kaput with wear on the Archimedes screw etc so we bought a secondhand one and had it fitted last week. It starts no bother, but now we have a problem with the fuel intake. Its got at least 3 gallons in, but when the car is going even slightly uphill from the flat, shes hunting for fuel, and ready to stall. Has anyone any ideas on what to check as its been in and out the local garage a few times in the past 3 weeks, and although the lad is great, he hasnt found the problem. We are really desperate for some advice now as times running out for her

very difficult to give advice without actually seeing the car..

where abouts in the country are you?

I am more than happy to come over and have a look if you are close to me, as are several others that i can think off.

possible problems that spring to mind are..

fuel pump it could be pumping enough to keep up with low revs but not a full tilt so to speak.. easy to check, just disconnect the fuel pipe at the carb and pump it into a container, it should pump 1 pint in 1 minute.

have you checked the vacuum advance retard mechanism is still working.. take the top off the distributor and suck on the pipe you should see the mechanism move slightly.

how old is the condensor it might be a bit old and failing under heavy load.

is the coil getting too hot to touch, are all the connections on it good and tight?

you say the car fails under load going up a hill, can you accelerate happily on the flat?

have you gone for a short run without the petrol cap on? it might be that you have a very close fitting cap which is causing a vacuum under load..

sorry if my comments are a bit unconnected and i feel sure others will be along soon with other ideas..

As above really, where are you!? Check if the piston can rise and fall in the carb ok - and try without air filter in case it's blocked. Is the engine 'known' to be good before you fitted it ? Have the valve gaps been checked/set ? Has the garage run a compression check - do you know the figures ??
