tracing original registration

Hi there
Is there a way to find out where the original reg of our convertible is? I would love to try and reunite it with the vehicle. Is this a vain hope, the DVLA tells me that it is currently in use on a car and I need to make an info request on form V888, but he would not tell me if the contact info would be divulged. Any thought please?
Andrew

I think all you can do is go along with the DVLA request.

I used the V888 form and got the original reg number for my Traveller along with the name of the person who bought it originally. No guarantees that they still own it now though.....

As it happens, today I called in to my local registration office making this very inquiry of recovering a vehicles original number, and added that ''provided the number had not been reissued of course'' to which I received the reply, Original numbers are not reused so I should be able to reclaim it. I found this rather strange and now have started to wonder if we were talking at cross purposes!

I think that's right - numbers are never 're-issued' by DVLA. But they can be 'retained' by car owners - and then used on another car they own - or sold on.
