Valve O rings and clips

Is it just me or do others have difficulty getting the O rings over the end of the valves? (and NO, I am not trying from the mushroom end! ) I have managed to fit them, just a rant really.
Also are those clips round the collets really necessary?

They just slip over - should be nice and oily anyway! make sure they sit in the base of the recess - then pop the collets in sitting just above the O ring. Throw the clips away.

Thanks BMC, did that with the o rings, just had hell of a job getting them on the stems, perhaps a tighter ring than normal (OOER!)
"Throw the clips away" - just what I wanted to hear, couldn't see the point of them anyway.
