Hi All,

A simple question really;-

IF you were to change the engine in your Mog what non-standard engine would you go for? And why?

Interested to see peoples replies!

Thanks for looking.

Cheers

Martin

Small basic diesel - for max MPG and ability to run on Veg Oil!

V W 150bhp PD diesel, great engine with plenty torque, but for now I'll stick to this, http://community.webshots.com/user/mogmad56 until I find a rwd gearbox for the VW engine :-?

Well into the 40's at the mo, but on boost quite a lot, which isn't good for mpg, once I get a 3.54 diff and big tyres, hopefully a good bit more.
I have used veg oil/bio diesel, a friend makes bio and it goes well on it, slightly down on power, but a bit quieter engine wise. Stinks like an old chip van though.
I can see a 1.5td Isuzu traveller sitting outside Bo'ness steam railway, yet.

Perhaps....... and smelling faintly of chips......... Pity it doesn't smell like Castrol R - which is Castor Oil based - now that does smell nice !

Something oddball just for the hell of it. Nice compact motorbike V4 perhaps, or Alfa V6 or a modern diesel

I've always fancied an air cooled flat four as per the original concept.
Went as far as buying a Citroen GS as a donor for the engine but it turned out to be too knackered to use :( .

LS4 or LS7 ally V8 with a couple of turbos!!

Do I really need to say why :o

(Also wouldn't mind a Judd or Cosworth V8 if it had to be atmospheric!)

Hello all,

it's very simple as there is no choice, a BMC 'A' series engine, nothing else will do.

Who really wants a mongrel?

so the early side valve cars are mongrels then?

for me a ****** rotary engine would be interesting..ever since i saw a guy lean in and lift one up out of his Ro80 engine bay in cardiff they have facinated me.. obviously he could have removed lots and lots of parts but still impressed me..

Moderators please look at the expletive deleter i have not sworn I have named the designer (or at least the one everyone uses) of the rotary engine!!!

Hello Charlie,

oops, sorry I forgot about those, I should have just said any BMC engine or hadn't Morris been included in that group when the side valve was current?

I can't say that the ****** engine is a good design, as it certainly rotates but seems to in an unbalanced way to me. Proper rotary engines are turbines.

The 918cc side valve engine was by Morris. The A series is an AUSTIN engine - aaaaaaghhhhh.........

Hello Charlie,

you didn't by any chance mis-spell it, as my post had no such warning :-)

" I though the sidevalve engine was a french engine originally " - any evidence to support this idea ? Not saying it isn't! Just wondering where it came from.

Hello Ian,

if it is the same engine as was fitted to the original Morris Minor (1930's or so, I'm not entirely sure) then that engine was the one from the French company that Morris bought. He changed all the fasteners to Whitworth heads while retaining the metric threads!

I would like to keep it a standard looking A series if I decided to change the engine. Maybe a low compression 1275 with a turbo. I believe there have been a few 1275 turbo Minors.

I certainly would not want to start cutting the body to fit anything as thin would risk the nightmare of the BIVA test, Q plate etc.
