Fuel punp.

Post by michaelsmorris »

I overhauled my elecric fuel pump recently.
Now there is a fast clicking coming from it which I presume is the points opening and closing quickly.
It doesn't do it all the time and it rarely did it before the pump packed in.
My question is, do I need to adjust the diaphragm? If so, do I screw it more or unwind it? I initially followed the instructions with the overhaul kit. These were to screw it in all the way and then unscrew it until the points would tip over, then unscrew it four further holes plus enough to line up the holes.

You should have screwed it on exactly the same number of turns - as the old set took to turn off. It certainly should not clatter away against a shut pipe - so - try blocking the outlet pipe (use a bolt) - and then turn the pump on - after one maybe two clicks - it should fall silent. If it doesn't - can only suggest you experiment with the number of turns since the original number is probably not known ?

I found sections B.4 and B.5 of the workshop manual useful for settings when I changed the points on mine - have you got a copy? If not I'm sure a helpful person will send you a link or PM me and I'll email it to you.
