Greetings from Dublin.

My name's Neil, I'm a 20 year old learner driver and I've just bought myself this '65 Morris Minor Traveller:



It was restored in 2009, with brand new wood, front disc brakes fitted, and a quick check brake fluid reservoir under the bonnet. The drive home was great fun (though my dad drove most of the way!), but unfortunately apart from that I haven't had much of a chance to spin her.

So I was wondering if anyone (any Irish members?) could advise me on insurance. We had the car registered in my mother's name, the idea being that I would be a named driver on her policy. I want to use the car as a daily driver, but most insurance companies are very vague about insuring cars older than 30 years. Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

But welcome to the forum anyway - if you haven't been struck by lightning....... You are of course not allowed to insure the car in one name - and have another drive it! The Insured person MUST be the MAIN driver of the car - it's an offence to do otherwise - and very strictly administered too. RH give me good low cost insurance - with recovery and roadside thrown in. But really - it's best to be honest with them and then there won't be any problems if you get stopped - or need to claim.

Hello! As an 18 year old girl insured on her own policy, i can assure you it's worth being truthful on who will be the main driver. I'm paying £475 with Footman James.

@limegreen Wow, that's really good. I was under the impression that Footman James would only insure you in your Moggy if you had a full licence for 5 years!

In any case, the best quote I got on my own policy was €2,000 a year, which is obviously ridiculous. Apart from that, I just got alot of "we don't insure cars over 30 years old".

The MMOC run a "Young Driver's Scheme" with Footman James. You have to be a member of the MMOC to qualify and have your membership number available when you get the quote. As their website only gives quotes for people over 25 it is important that you ring. They will only quote for younger members by personal telephone call. If you are already a member and have trouble getting a quote from them give the MMOC Derby office a ring and ask them to help 01332 291675

Oh, and avoid comparison sites like the plague.

Neil -- except for the kind of Minor, the country, and just one year of age, you have exactly the same story as mine! Oh -- whoops -- except mine's not been restored before I bought it. You'll have great fun with her, once the insurance is sorted out (and it will be soon, no fear).

hi i can see where your at im older and have been driving for a few years now and i brought a 1967 saloon a week ago which needs restoration but i had no idea who to get insurance with and one company actually laughed at me when i asked for cover but there are some good companies out there i found one in the end and got a very good quote

Yeah I got the laughter reaction too! Ridiculous.

Anyway, I bit the bullet and had it insured with Aviva. It cost alot more than I had hoped, but my premium is set to drop dramatically in November (provided I pass my test!). Should also get a bit back as I won't have been insured as a learner for the full year.
