Parcel Shelf for Series MM.

Post by oliver-morrisminor »

Does the steel angle for the front of the shelf face outwards?
i.e. the open part of the angle face your legs?
In the hand book the drawings look to be this way,
with the screw heads that hold the shelf also being shown outwards?

Also is it just the bare painted metal finish, & what colour? Or is it padded as in the later 1000's? :D

And what colour is the original cardboard shelf and what finish is it?

And how is it held up at the back please?

With thanks,

Hi Oliver... I'm sure the bar only fits the one way as the plate with the bolt holes through at either end are angled. Looking from the side of the car at the passenger side it would look like an upside down L . Mine is like a yellowy creamy color and unpadded, my parcel shelf was black on top and the same yellowy creamy colour underneath. It is held up at the back with copper split rivets used on suitcases and briefcases, with washers through holes in the bulk head I'll look for a link. If you have the heater fitted in the middle it is very hard to get the bar in it almost makes it feel as if it wasn't designed to fit!

The rivets look like this

http://www.saddler.co.uk/shop.html?cr=3 ... vets_brass

They are shorter though and in copper and you'll need 3mm washers for inside the bulkhead.

The metal rail should be the same colour as the glove box lid "dashboard gold" and the parcel shelf a similar colour. They appear to be out of stock here at the moment.
If you undo the top two heater mountiing bolts and the screw onto the parcel shelf and push the heater back then it is easier to fit the shelf

My '48 was (and is still) the same brown used for the steering wheel/column.

I assume that the cars with the gold column would have a gold parcel shelf too if MP's is that way.

OK & thanks for all the feedback.
I have a friend who is also looking to install a parcel shelf, but in a 1955
Series II. It also seems to be a short one, but what colour should this one
be as originally it had "no" glove box lids at all?

You might be better asking that question on the bodywork section of the message board where it will be seen by non Series MM owners.

Hi every one,
I got a hold of some thick automotive cardboard from an Auto Trimmer supplier.
It is a gloss leather grain Black on the top and Grey Matt cardboard on the back.

I was able to borrow another parcel shelf to copy. I have done a rough fit up and it looks great.

I will wait untill I have had all the 12volt electrical work done then I will install.

By the way the cardboard sheet was large enough to do 4 @ Series MM parcel shelves,
but may ony do 3 @ 1000's. It cost about $36.00 Aussie. I think that is about 22.00 UK Pounds.

I have been cleaning the parcel shelf in my July 1950 MM and the paint on the rain is a brown / red colour.

Hope this helps

In OJO, Dec 1949/Jan 1950, the rail is the same brown as the steering column.

The rail in the photo looks to be upside down. Nice carpets.

Hi Mike, thanks for the comments.
And NO the rail is in the right way.

That what confussed me at first, but this is the only way it will fit
as it tapers on the ends to suit the taper of the side kick panels.

Check your glovebox hand books and there are pictures of it this way.

Your parcel shelf seems to be designed to achieve maximum penetration of the shins in the event of an accident.
Here are some photos of mine which even has a cutout to clear the steering column. Did they change them in 52 or has a previous owner put mine in the wrong way round? The end mounting holes fit well.[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

Oliver & Judge have the bar the right way. It looks like Oliver might have fitted the shelf on the other side of the bar to Judge's though.

Mike, yours has been rotated approx. 45deg back towards the driver for some reason (possible for the heater bracket), hence the need for the column cut out.

When I fit a new shelf I will see how it lines up. I may have to keep it the same because of the speakers
